Final Phase of the Cooling Process of the Rlalb Dam (Lerida, Spain)

Nine years after completing the concrete works of the Rialb dam, the heat of the setting of cement in the centre of the structure still has not been completely evacuated. The RCC dam was constructed from 1995 to 1999 and has a maximum height above foundation of 101m, a crest length of 605. 9m and block width of 40m and 22. 75m. In this article results from the analysis of the cooling process of the RCC dam are shown. A statistical evaluation of the temperature data obtained with embedded thermometers showed that the minimum stabilization temperature with the environment had not been reached until the end of the year 2007, and that no irreversible component of thermal diminution had been detected. This was also influenced by the fact that the structure could only be loaded to some extent due to water scarcity during the last years and the supply with irrigation water during the estival period. Six months after the last thermal diminution in winter 2006/2007, the central core of the structure reached a minimum temperature of 12 ℃. This led to abrupt openings with a width of more than 1mm in the interior of the contraction joints and in an area of about 30m at half height of the dam.
