The Significance of Calibration of Surface Nuclear Density Gauges
Both surface and strata nuclear density gauges could be used for quality control and acceptance inspection of civil engineering projects including RCC roads and dams. For the engineering projects of RCC, a strata gauge is mainly appropriate for RCC dam, while a surface gauge is mainly used for RCC pavement in the world. But most of the RCC dams in China only use surface gauges. In order to measure the accurate density and water content of materials, the gauges must be calibrated with standardized calibration blocks of known densities. The calibration of all gauges shall be verified or re-established at regular intervals. Gauge calibration shall be adjusted if necessary. Field Calibration specified by some Chinese standard methods for nuclear gauges is the calibration adjustment in reality. There are two methods used for the Field Calibration One is to use a set of prepared blocks for each material tested to correct the measurement of gauges, and the other is to make correlation analysis between density measurement of gauges and other test method such as sand cone. The function of Field Calibration is enlarged too much and is used to replace the real gauge calibration. The significance of calibration has been ignored and it has become one of the major causes why most of the gauges in China have never been re-calibrated from the date when it was manufactured.
