Research and Application of MgO Concrete in Longtan RCC Cofferdams

Longtan HPP uses universal raw material to produce MgO expansion agent. On the basis of the systematic research on the behaviors of the MgO concrete such as autogenous volume deformation and physic-mechanical characteristics etc., MgO is added in the RCC of the downstream cofferdam. By means of compensation function analysis on the thermal stress, the cofferdam is determined to have a maximum height of 45. 9m, an axis length of 273. 043m and have no transversal joints, and is entirely placed with Characteristic MgO expansive concrete in a way of full section placement. Field coring test and prototype observation have been conducted and the analysis on the obtained data indicates that the thermal stress meets the requirements and no cracks have been discovered in the cofferdam from construction to dismantlement.
