Study on Seismic Safety of CSG Dam
Hardfill dam is a new type of dam (called CSG dam in Japan), which has a symmetrical trapezoid-shaped cross section and a concrete impervious facing in the upstream. The hardfill dam is deemed to own a stronger earthquake-resistance. By means of the finite element method (FEM), two-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamic calculations on hardfill dam are performed in this paper using mode superposition response spectrum method and time- history analysis method. The methodology of seismic response of the dam-foundation-reservoir system is used and 3D seismic excitation on the dam base has been taken as well. The hardfill dams self-vibration characteristics (frequencies, periods and vibration modes) and the seismic responses (deformations, stresses and accelerations) of the dam body and concrete facing are analyzed. Then the differences between the dynamic characteristics and the seismic responses of hardfill dam and those of the gravity dam have been studied, and the earthquake-resistance of hardfill dam has been assessed with objective method. The conclusion is drawn that the hardfill dam authentically represents a much better earthquake resistance than the gravity dam and is a type of dam with high earthquake-resistant safety.
