EXTRACTION OF BRIDGE FREQUENCIES FROM A PASSING VEHICLEAN INDIRECT APPROACH
Most existing techniques for measuring the bridge frequencies belong to direct approaches, in the sense that the frequencies are measured directly from the bridge response and that the vibration sensors are mounted directly on the bridge. Such approaches are generally costly and labour-intensive, which may require detouring of existing traffic. An indirect approach for obtaining the bridge frequencies is to use a test vehicle moving over the bridge as a message receiver and to extract the bridge frequencies from the dynamic response of the vehicle. Such a technique was firstly attempted by the authors. It has been proved to be feasible for extracting the first frequency of the bridge. However, some difficulties exist with extraction of the higher modes. In this paper, the theoretical background of such an approach based on related papers will be summarized, while highlights will be given for future research.
