STRUCTURAL DAMAGE IDENTIFICATION FROM CHANGES IN MODAL STRAIN ENERGY
A simple method to localize and estimate the severity of damage from monitoring changes in modal strain energy is presented in this paper. This method only requires one or a few of mode shapes of the structure before and after damage. A correlated finite element model and mass normalization of the mode shapes are not required. The method is evaluated by a simulated simply supported beam with several damage scenarios. The numerical verification shows the proposed method is efficient.
