IDENTIFICATION OF STRUCTURAL OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS AND VIBRATION RESPONSE BEHAVIOUR USING WAVELET ANALYSIS
This application-oriented paper presents wavelet analysis technique for condition monitoring and characterization of the dynamic responses of structures during operational conditions. The attributes of this study include: (ⅰ) demonstration of the unique strength of wavelet analysis for detection of singularity in the vibration responses; (ⅱ) identification of non-stationary signal characteristics in real-life vibration responses; (ⅲ) application of wavelet analysis to real-time structural health monitoring through investigation of the local and global variations in the vibration responses of the structures concerned. The proposed technique is demonstrated on simulated data as well as vibration responses measured from a reinforced concrete (RC) T-beam, West Gate Bridge subjected to ambient excitation and from the Manchester stadium subjected to four different types of ambient excitation. The results obtained clearly demonstrate the unique capability and relevance of wavelet analysis for characterization and condition monitoring of complex civil engineering systems.
