SENSITIVITY STUDY OF MODAL STRAIN ENERGY FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DETECTION
Extraction of damage-sensitive features from measured signals is one of the crucial issues in the structural monitoring. A number of researchers have proposed several vibration-based structural damage detection methods for the monitoring of operational structures. The fundamental structural dynamic properties are the natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes. These can be further processed to modal flexibilities and modal strain energy. The sensitivity study is mainly focused on the natural frequencies, damping ratios, mode shapes and modal flexibility. However, the sensitivity study on the modal strain energy is still lack. This paper presents the sensitivity study for modal strain energy with respect to changes in the correction factors of the physical parameters. A simply supported beam based on the changes in the elastic modulus is used to numerically study the sensitivity of the elemental modal strain energy from three aspects.
