DAMAGE DETECTION OF A PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAM

In civil engineering it is necessary to monitor structures and bridges to maintain safety conditions. Nondestructive test methods such as dynamic damage detection outmatch other methods. Therefore research in dynamic performance of prestressed concrete beams is inevitable for health monitoring of bridges and structures. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on one PC beam and one RC beam. During the experiment static loads with increasing amplitude were applied, in between each load step a dynamic measurement was performed. The results show that by use of measurement of natural frequencies the health of concrete beam-like structures could be monitored and that the measured low order natural frequencies ratios are conform to the theoretic values of Euler-Bernoulli beam, however not suitable for high order natural frequencies. Due to the uncontrolled testing condition, the results of dynamic test could not reveal the effect of prestress force on natural frequencies.
