STRUCTURAL DAMAGE ALARMING BASED ON WAVELET PACKET ANALYSIS USING AMBIENT VIBRATION TEST-PART Ⅰ: METHODOLOGY AND STRATEGY
A novel structural damage alarming method is proposed in this paper. The method is based on the energy variations of structural ambient vibration responses decomposed using wavelet packet analysis. The core of this method is that the proposed wavelet packet energy spectrum (WPES) has the ability of detecting the structural damage from ambient vibration signals. From the viewpoint of real implementation in ambient excitation cases, a robust realization procedure is developed which consists of two steps: 1) calculation of the WPES based on the extraction of the virtual impulse response functions from the measured structural ambient responses; 2) extraction of the damage alarming index ERVD from the measured WPES. Numerical study of the Kabes 6-DOF problem is adopted to verify the proposed method. Results indicate that the damage alarming indices (ERVD) have preferable robusticity under ambient excitations. Hence, the proposed method is very suitable for on- line monitoring of structural health condition under ambient excitations.
