STRUCTURAL DAMAGE ALARMING BASED ON WAVELET PACKET ANALYSIS USING AMBIENT VIBRATION TEST-PART Ⅱ: APPLICATION

This paper is a continuation of the paper titled Structural Damage Alarming Based on Wavelet Packet Analysis Using Ambient Vibration test-Part I: Methodology and Strategy with the emphasis on application of the developed method to the ASCE Benchmark problem. The proposed damage alarming method is illustrated with a steel-frame scaled structure and the simulated damage is removing bracing or loosening bolts. Some problems to be dealt with in this application include: (1) environmental variability and damage alarming capacity of WPES- based method under real ambient excitations; (2) comparative study of damage alarming capacity of WPES-based method under ambient excitations and hammer excitations. The experimental results reveal that the damage alarming index ERVD based on the wavelet packet analysis of the extracted virtual impulse response functions is a good candidate index that is sensitive to structural local damage under real ambient excitations, which is very suitable for on-line structural health monitoring.
