APPLICATION RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DIAGNOSIS BASED ON FIBER BRAGG GRATING SENSORS

The fabrication and sensing principle of FBG sensors are briefly introduced. The perfect linear relationship between the change of FBGs wavelength and strain is demonstrated by experiments of uniform strength beam with the FBG sensors installed. Change of structural strain modal before and after structural damage occurs is taken as damage index. Structural damage is detected based on FBG sensors measurement information. In order to illustrate application of FBG sensors to structural diagnosis, the cantilever structure, which is 1.6 meters high, 0.01 meters wide and 0.014 meters deep, is designed. The undamaged structure is simulated by the holes covered with plates, whereas, the plates are removed to mean the damaged structure. The experimental result shows that FBG sensors have high measurement precision level and low noise level with the application the FBG sensors. Furthermore, the damage better diagnosis result can be achieved by using measurement information with FBG sensors.
