EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON STRONG WIND CHARACTERISTICS OF RUNYANG SUSPENSION BRIDGE
Experimental study on strong wind characteristics is of great value to development of Wind Engineering. In order to provide reliable basis for wind resistant evaluation of Runyang Suspension Bridge (RSB), two anemometers were installed in structural healthy monitoring system (SHMS) of RSB, one is on the top of the south tower and the other is in the middle of the main span. When typhoon Matsa passed through Jiangsu in August 2005, it was wholly recorded at the RSB spot by the two anemometers. The measurement data are analyzed to obtain the average wind velocity and direction, the variation of wind speed with altitude, the turbulence intensity and power spectrum, etc. It is found that the variation of wind speed with altitude can accord with the formula of criterion and the turbulence intensity is larger than normal, but the turbulence power spectrum can not fit the Kaimal spectrum well, it is a little smaller in low frequency domain and a little larger in high frequency domain. Results obtained in this paper can provide reference values for wind resistant evaluation of other long-span suspension bridges.
