PIEZOELECTRIC SHUNT VIBRATION DAMPING OF A PRECISION MECHANICAL SYSTEMS

In this paper, the piezoelectric shunt damping system is improved by introducing negative impedance converter to eliminate the inherent loss resistance of wire wound inductor in the shunt circuit. And the profile optimization is performed for the piezoelectric patch to enhance the vibration reduction capability of piezoelectric shunt damping system in application to precision mechanism. The vibration control of the head actuator of hard disk drive (HDD) using piezoelectric shunt circuit is investigated experimentally to verify the proposed improving scheme. The effects of additional stiffness and additional mass of the bonded PZT transducer are analyzed. The vibration response suppression test for the head actuator of HDD is conducted by using the improved piezoelectric shunt damping technique. The high efficiency of vibration reduction is demonstrated by a 323% increasing in transient vibration decay rate and the steady response reduction of 20.36dB, 9.30dB and 3.48dB for the first three vibration modes rspectively.
