INVESTIGATION AND SIMULATION OF BUMP EFFECTS ON VEHICLE-INDUCED DYNAMIC VIBRATION OF BRIDGES

The unevenness, or bump at bridge ends, is caused by the differential settlement between the embankment soil and the bridge abutments and/or bridge approach span deformation. The bump-related problems have been commonly recognized, and the causes have been identified. In this study the vehicle induced bridge dynamic responses are predicted by modeling the bridge and vehicle into one coupled 3D bridge-vehicle system. The dynamic behavior of bridges with different span lengths induced by the AASHTO HS20 truck is assessed under different bump conditions at the bridge ends. The bump condition causes significant dynamic responses in short span slab bridges. Impact factors obtained from numerical analyses are compared with those values specified in the AASHTO codes. The bump induced vehicle impact on bridges is one of the causes for bridge deterioration and maintenance.
