INFRATRUCTURE CONDITION MONITORING, MAINTENANCE, AND MANAGEMENT

A stochastic model is proposed to optimize a rehabilitation and replacement program for an existing highway network, including roads and bridges. It takes into account the uncertainties associated with traffic demand and highway service quality over the projected years of service. An example is given to illustrate how the model can be applied to a highway. The highway service quality is affected by the action of rehabilitation and the deterioration process of structural components and systems. Structural deterioration can be monitored with instrumentation. As such, a simple framework is proposed to delineate how structural monitoring can positively contribute to the preservation of a rehabilitated component bridge and the asset management of networked bridges. The framework has an inner loop for monitoring and maintenance interaction, and an outer loop for the interaction among monitoring, maintenance, and management. The inner loop is illustrated with applications to 5 highway bridges in USA.
