IMAGING-BASED VISUAL INSPECTION FOR BRIDGE CONDITION ASSESSMENT
The traditional visual inspection method used to acquire bridge condition data is costly and time- consuming, and the bridge rating procedure is deeply affected by the subjective nature of the inspector. The paper first presented a system aiming to replace the manual inspection with an automated inspection using a digital camera and imaging processing techniques. It was developed to improve the accuracy and quality of the crack inspection of concrete structure. Then, the paper presented an imaging-based method for condition rating of surface quality of weathering steel bridge using wavelet transform (WT) and support vector machine (SVM). The effectiveness of the integrated method for crack detection and the condition ratings for corroded weathering steel bridge has been confirmed through systematic investigations on 3 images with cracks and a representative set of 530 images of corroded weathering steel.
