Ecosystem Benefits from Safety Operations in River Meuse
The floods of 1993 and 1995 along the river Meuse made clear that the Netherlands was not sufficiently armed against the risk of flooding. A large-scale water management project in the river Meuse was born. The Ministry of transport, public works and water management in co-operation with the Province of Limburg and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality has as goal to make the Meuse a safe, navigable river for future generations but also a haven for plants and animals. Within a combination of several flood protection measures opportunities for the creation of new conservation areas and the improvement of existing plant and wildlife habitats has been availed. It is possible to achieve both safety and ecological benefits within a large-scale project.
