NEW TYPES OF COASTAL STRUCTURES ON SOFT SOILS
According to the engineering practice of constructing harbor breakwaters and estuary jetties in China since the middle of the nineties of the 20th century, five new types of coastal structures developed for soft soil conditions are introduced in the present paper, including semi-circular floating caisson breakwater on treated soil foundation, hollow-block mound breakwater and embedded cylinders breakwater, etc. Analysis indicates that to reduce the wave forces acting on the structure, to increase the resistance of the structure against sliding, to decrease the weight of the structure, to speed up the consolidation of the foundation soil, and to transfer the loads on the structure to the deeper soil layer, are all the reasonable and effective principles for designing the coastal structures on soft soils.
