WAVE OVERTOPPING IN THE SURF ZONE

Wave overtopping in the surf zone occurs after shallow waves experience various complicated mechanisms such as wave shoaling, wave breaking, nonlinear movement and breaking dissipation of surfing waves as well as run-up and overtopping itself. If the breakwaters were located in the surf zone, therefore, the accurate estimation of wave overtopping can be ensured only by reasonable evaluation of such surf mechanisms. The present paper discusses previous works of wave overtopping and suggests various theoretical and empirical equations concerned with the surfing mechanisms. A new semi-theoretical equation of breaking depth has been developed, which is an important value for the estimation of set-down and set-up. A new surf parameter has also been suggested for the estimation of wave overtopping, which can be used for a up-right breakwater as well as a sloping breakwater. The empirical equation has been tested against an existing set of laboratory data.
