NUMERICAL STUDY ON WAVE MOTIONS OVER DIFFERENT SUBMERGED DYKES

The submerged dyke plays an important role in beach protection and accretion promotion. The efficiency and economics of the project are influenced by the type and height of submerged dyke. In this paper, the wave motions around different submerged dykes are investigated by a numerical wave model which based on RANS and VOF method. The types of submerged dykes include rectangular-type, trapezoidal-type, semicircular-type, and flute-type. Through the numerical simulation, the characteristics of the wave breaker over submerged dyke, breaker type and the change of wave height over the dyke are analyzed under the action of irregular waves respectively. The changes of flow field and the distribution of wave height are analyzed to know how the dyke dissipates wave energy and to determine the optimized submerged dyke type. The factors that influence the wave energy dissipating effect, such as relative freeboard (F/Hi), breaker position, relative dyke crest width (B/Hi), wave steepness (H/L), and the types of submerged dyke, are also discussed.
