ESTIMATES OF THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL EXCHANGE OF WATERS IN A STRATIFIED ESTUARY USING A BOX MODEL

This study was performed to estimate the horizontal and vertical exchange of waters in Inohana Lake, Japan, which is a semi-enclosed estuary connecting to the main lake,Hamana Lake through a narrow channel with a width of 75 m and highly stratified during summer. In order to examine the horizontal and vertical exchanges of waters between Inohana and Hamana Lakes and within Inohana Lake respectively, we carried out a field survey of current velocity, salinity and water density, and undertook a test using a simple box model based on the average salinity and river discharge. The exchanges of waters calculated between two lakes agreed closely with the observed ones. The box model could predict the average flow or exchange rate. Advection was dominant over diffusion in terms of the vertical transport of salinity, and those were the largest near the river mouth. The amount of the vertical transport of salinity increased under the weak stratification. The horizontal exchanges of waters were influenced by the vertical ones. The vertical profile of salinity controlled the exchanges of waters. The exchanges of waters could be estimated at some places in the lake using the box model.
