DISTRIBUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF FLUID MUD IN THE SEAWARD CHANNEL OF THE LINGDING SEA
Due to its high fluidity and high plasticity, the fluid mud, under the action of tide currents and waves and its deadweight, has great effect on sediment transportation and underwater landform. The study, on the formation and the basic characteristics and the evolution laws of the fluid mud, has the profound significance for the maintenance and full utilization of navigation channels. On the basis of the observed results in 1990, 1991, 2001, 2006 by use of the γ -ray densimeter, the fluid mud was widely found in the seaward channel of the Lingding Sea, but its distribution area has decreased during the recent period. The thickness of the fluid mud is thin and 0.1~0.6m in general, and the thicker fluid mud was mainly found in the north reach of the seaward channel. According to the change of the distribution range of the fluid mud, it has proved that the fluid mud is only founded in the channel and its thickness and area in the flood season is obviously larger than those in the dry season. It follows that the weak hydrodynamic environment and the abundant fine particles are the two important conditions for the formation of the fluid mud. The study has also proved that the formation location, the depth and length of the fluid mud have periodic change with the action of flood and ebb tides.
