STUDY ON THE HORIZONTAL BEARING CAPACITY OF SUCTION CAISSON FOUNDATIONS

The horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of suction caisson foundations is studied by means of model tests and finite element methods. The horizontal failure modes and mechanism of suction caisson foundations and the earth pressure acting on the caisson wall are first qualitatively studied by model tests. The horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of the single caisson foundations and the active and passive earth pressure acting on caisson are further quantitatively analyzed by FEM. The formula for evaluating the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of the single caisson foundations is suggested on the basis of above results. Finally, the variation relationship of the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of double caisson foundations is investigated and the means to evaluate the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of the double caissons foundations is given.
