METHOD AND EQUIPMENT FOR MODEL TEST OF GRASSED REVETMENT EROSION

In order to do experimental study on the reinforced turf’s flow resistance and hydraulic characteristics used in grassed channel, a test method and experimental equipment is designed. The designed principle is that the turf’s critical shear stress and the friction velocity in model should be equal to that in prototype. The designed closed plexiglass-flume can produce a flow with maximal mean velocity up to 6.75m·s -1 . Theoretic analysis proves that the flow depth in flume has no dominant effect on the shear stress above vegetative bed. In order to examine the reliability of experimental equipment and the validity of experimental principle, the hydraulic roughness of the plexiglass-flume and vegetation, and the threshold velocities of test soils were measured. The test data are all in a normal range, which proves that the experimental provision and the experimental principle in this paper are reasonable and reliable1. Model experiment about scouring riverbank with grass cover was carried out by using this experimental equipment. The critical flow condition of turf destruction was obtained through the experiment. And these experimental results can be directly applied in bank revetment engineering in a practical river.
