THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ORGANIC MATTERS CIRCULATION IN HIROSHIMA BAY

In enclosed bay, the organic matter which is deposited on the sea bottom is resolved by upwelling, and this significantly influences the water environment. For the continuous management of the seawater environment, it is important to understand the circulation mechanism of organic matter. In this paper, the characteristics of water quality and current in Hiroshima Bay were investigated. In addition to the process of settlement of particulate organic matter and the parameters about the upwelling of the sediment were discussed. The generation of stratification was analyzed from the water quality profiles which were observed in every 1 m during each season from year 2000, and current characteristics were cleared from the calculation of the inflow amount of seawater into Hiroshima Bay from the Seto Inland Sea. The settling velocity of the organic matter is simply calculated by the observed data, and it can be represented in exponential function of the stratification strength. Pore water movement is suggested as factor of upwelling of deposited mud on the sea bed and it is found that this keeps the high water content in sea bottom sediment.
