Direct Reduction Between Hematite and Solid Carbon

Recently, the composite pellets between iron ore and carbon are studying by many researchers, in order to its high reactivity. However, the reaction mechanism of the composite pellet is not yet clarified. It is obviously determined the reaction mechanism at initial stage as the direct reaction between the solid carbon and iron oxide. However, in the course of reaction, the reaction mechanism will change to the indirect reduction of iron oxide with CO gas in order to the separation of the interface between the solid carbon and the iron oxide. And in this case, the rate limiting step will be in the gasification of the carbon materials with CO<,2> (Boudouard reaction), that the most of researchers have determined in their studies. In this study, poly crystal hematite sample (grain size was approximately 20μm) was prepared. The hematite sample was coated by carbon with different thickness. The in situ observation by laser microscope was carried out for showing the existence of direct reduction of iron oxide with solid carbon. The crystal orientation and morphology was investigated before and after the reaction using EBSP, SEM, AFM and Raman.
