Nitrogen Behavior of Pressurized Induction Furnace
High nitrogen steel (HNS) has potential to develop innovative products since nitrogen improves corrosion resistivity and hardness of alloy simultaneously that was hard to obtain by conventional stainless steel design. Couple of pressurized melting process has been proposed and practically used recently in order to produce HNS. Pressurized induction furnace (PRIF) is the process to produce HNS without using nitride alloy that containing unintended component. Basic phenomena such as transition and equilibrate of nitrogen concentration of the melt under pressurized nitrogen gas atmosphere had investigated with 50kg/1.0MPa bench scale PRIF and 0.5ton/2.0MPa pilot scale plant of which had designed and installed at Daido Steel. It was found that nitrogen concentration absorption follows to first order gas/metal reaction. Mass transfer in molten metal is the rate controlling process in this reaction and temperature and pressure do not affect to mass transfer coefficient. It was also found that equilibrated nitrogen concentration is able to calculate by conventional thermodynamic formula with employing appropriate parameters even in high pressure region.
