Investigation on Cleanliness of IF Steel CC Slabs Which Are Cast During the Unsteady Casting Period

The influence of the reoxidation and casting speed change during the unsteady casting period on the cleanliness of IF steel CC slabs was investigated. It was found that the reoxidation of the liquid steel during the time of cast start was much more serious than the reoxidation during the time of ladle exchange and cast end. In the experiment, when the casting speed was evenly decreased from 1.4m/min to 0.6m/min, the increases of the non-metallic inclusions owing to the increased mold powder entrapment were observed only on those slabs which were cast at the start of casting speed change. While, when the casting speed was evenly increased from 0.6m/min to 1.4m/min, the increases of nonmetallic inclusions were observed only on slabs which were cast at the time when the casting speed was stopped to increase after it had been increased to 1.4m/min. For slabs which were cast during the casting speed evenly increasing or decreasing period and at the time when increasing or decreasing the casting speed at low casting speed level, the influence of casting speed change was very small. In addition, it was found that, at high casting speed level (1.4m/min), even a slight change of casting speed could result in remarkable increase of the non-metallic inclusions. So, changing casting speed at high casting speed level should be avoided or using slower speed changing rate. In the study, mathematic simulation was made to the flow in the mold, which also indicates that the flow of the liquid steel is much more largely influenced at the time when the casting speed is started to decrease or casting speed increasing is stopped at higher casting speed level.
