Exothermic Mold Fluxes for Slab Casting in Sumitomo Metals

One of the important points of continuous casting operation is to keep both adequate temperature and proper flow rate of the meniscus in the mold simultaneously for the purpose of avoiding the entrapment of gas bubbles and non-metallic inclusions by the solidification shell. From this point of view, we have developed technologies to enhance heat insulating property of the mold flux layer, and to control flow pattern in the mold. In this paper, successful development of exothermic mold fluxes for start period and steady state of casting is presented, which has promoted removal of bubbles and inclusions.
