A New Structural Damage Detection Method Based on Statistical Moments
This paper presents a new structural damage detection method based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of a structure under random excitation. The principle of new method is put forward in terms of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems. The sensitivity of statistical moment to structural damage is studied for different types of structural responses and different orders of statistical moments. The effect of measurement noise on damage detection is also ascertained. Numerical examples show that the fourth-order moments of story drifts can be used-to accurately identify both location and severity of structural stiffness reduction of a shear building. A significant advantage of the proposed damage detection method lies in that it is not sensitive to measurement noise.
