Health Monitoring of Highway Bridges-Perspective of a Bridge Owner
Highway bridge monitoring in service condition and extreme events is essential for bridge owners to understand bridge performance, develop new design/analysis methodologies, ensure bridge safety, integrity and serviceability, and make decisions for bridge repair, retrofitting and rehabilitation. This paper discusses bridge monitoring with respect to its applications (existing bridges, new bridges, constructions and extreme events), tools and sensors, validations and hurdles, in a manner of Why, What and How. Several practical examples of monitoring in service condition and extreme events .are given. The FHWA Long Term Bridge Performance Program (LTBPP) is briefly introduced.
