Application of Fiber Optic Sensors for Health Monitoring of Civil Engineering
Fiber optic sensors (FOSs) are widely used in health monitoring of structures including important civil engineering structures, aerial structures and mechanical structures. Fiber optic sensors can be classified as four kinds in accordance with signal collection mode: i.e. point type, integral type, quasi distributed type and distributed type. Basic principles and characteristics of these fiber optic sensors are described. At the same time, an overview of current research and development in civil structural health monitoring for these fiber optic sensors is presented. Existing problems and promising research efforts in packaging, sensing measurement, installation for fiber optic sensors in civil structure health monitoring applications are discussed.
