Safety Evaluation for Bridge Subjected to Near-fault Three-Dimensional Ground Motions

Near-fault strong ground motions, which are characterized by large vertical acceleration and complicated frequency-spectrum, have resulted in the significant damage of structures. Through studying on the peak value ratio and the response spectra ratio of near-fault ground motions, the value of existing seismic design code in near-fault zone is unreasonable. At the same time, the influence of earthquake magnitude and pulse effect on peak value ratio and response spectra ratio has been analyzed. And then, nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis method has been used to calculate the seismic response of the finite element model for simple- supported bridge excited by near-fault ground motions with large vertical component. The calculation results noted that the seismic response of bridge subjected to near-fault ground motions with large vertical component and pulse effect must be given much more our attention.
