Laboratory Evaluation of Mechanical Performance on Surfacing Asphalt Mixtures in Hong Kong
This paper presents the details of the laboratory performance evaluation of the four kinds of asphalt concrete (AC) wearing course mixtures, including conventional AC20, rubber modified AC20, polyester fiber reinforced AC20 and Gilsonite modified AC20. The same gradation was applied for all mixtures and the base bitumen was shell 60/70. The results indicate that compared to conventional AC20, polyester fiber reinforced AC20 and rubber modified AC20 are found to have satisfactory performance with respect to load spreading ability (stiffness) and resistance to moisture damage, permanent deformation and ageing, when evaluated in a series of laboratory tests designed to assess the fundamental mechanical properties of these materials. A higher stiffness Gilsonite modified AC20 exhibits the lower permanent deformation potential, but would be expected to be disadvantageous for cracking resistance at low temperature, and moreover, the poor resistance to moisture damage and ageing has been validated. Baled on the testing results and considering the environmental issue, rubber modified AC20 is recommended as the most favorable materials to be used for pavement surfacing in Hong Kong.
