Temperature Loading Effects on a Long Span Suspension Bridge

A Wind And Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) for Tsing Ma Bridge has been devised, installed and operated by Highways Department of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) since 1997. The WASHMS is devised to carry out the monitoring of four categories of parameters, namely, environmental status, traffic loads, bridge features and bridge responses. This paper investigates the predominating temperature loading effects on mean displacement response of Tsing Ma Bridge based on recorded temperature data from temperature sensors and bridge displacement data from displacement transducers and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The recorded statistical data regarding the ambient/bridge temperature and the bridge displacement responses are first pre-processed in order to remove unreasonable and undesirable data and ensure the quality of analysis. The statistics of both ambient temperature loading environment and effective bridge temperature undergone by Tsing Ma Bridge are then obtained for different time intervals. The correlation between the ambient temperature and the effective bridge temperature is examined in terms of their statistical details. The mean displacement responses of the bridge deck, bridge towers, and cables in three directions are also analyzed to obtain their statistics. The statistical relationships between the ambient/bridge temperature and the displacement responses of the bridge are finally established. It can be concluded from the results that the mean displacement responses of Tsing Ma Bridge are mainly caused by either temperature or mean wind, in which the longitudinal and vertical mean displacement responses of the bridge deck are mainly caused by the temperature while the lateral mean displacement responses are dominantly affected by the mean wind.
