Strain Analyses of HDPE Cable Sheathing of Xupu Bridge
Stay-cables are the main load bearing structures of cable-stayed bridge. Being in the wild environment and under a stress condition, stay-cables may suffer from corrosion disease, which will injure the durability and safety of stay-cables as a result. The service life of cable-stayed bridges will be affected finally. So the anticorrosion measures for stay-cable are crucial to bridges durability and safety. High- density polyethylene (HDPE) is widely used as stay- cable protection sheathing nowadays. However, it has been documented that some bridges in service have been found cracks and breaks in the HDPE cable sheathing, so the durability of HDPE has been attracted extensive attention. Generally, macromolecular materials have poor performance on resistance to ageing, fatigue and environment stress crack (ESC). And the stress level is the base of research on fatigue and ESC. There is little literature about the stress of the HDPE cable sheathing in service. In this paper, the real strain of HDPE cable sheathing on Xupu Bridge is measured, and then the fatigue stress amplitude and cycle have been calculated with rainflow cycle counting method.
