Model Updating of Civil Infrastructure with Concurrent Multifactor Optimization Technique

Model updating is basically a multi-criterion optimization problem. With this idea, a new technique is proposed in this paper for model updating of civil infrastructure, which is called the concurrent multifactor optimization technique. The evaluation function method is applied to transform a multi- criteria optimization problem into a single criteria optimization problem. Using iterative algorism, the initial structural model is updated. The proposed technique for the model updating is applied to the model updating of the welded steel truss structure with the tested data of structural responses. In order to compare the results of model updating by different methods, several types of methods are discussed, in which model updating is carried out by considering model parameter updating individually, multifactor updating step by step and concurrent muhifactor updating with the proposed technique. Finally, the updated model is validated through the tested data different from the data for model updating. It can be shown from this work that the evaluation function method is a simple and efficient method in transforming a multi-criteria optimization into a single criteria optimization, and the concurrent muhifactor optimization technique with the updating parameters changing in the smallest range is the best multifactor model updating method.
