Flaw-Detected Coating and Its Application

An innovative intelligent coating for in-situ and initiatively monitoring structure health has been carried out in this paper. The specific intelligent coating has the ability to monitor crack initiation and propagation on surfaces and within lap/rivet joints. Normally the developed intelligent coating is consisted of three layers: the driving layer, the sensing layer and the protective layer. The driving layer is made of nonconductive materials while the sensing layer is made of conductive materials and the crack length in substrate surfaces can be presented by the variation of the resistance of the sensing layer. Nano-Cu and Polyurethane were applied to make the sensing layer and the driver layer respectively in the present study. The thickness of the driving layer and the sensing layer is about 20μm and 15μm respectively, while the width of the sensing layer is 2mm. Based on the specific intelligent coating a structure health monitoring system has been built, and it is found that the flaw in substrate as small as 0.5mm could be detected as the increment of the resistance of the sensing layer at the level of 0.06Ω.
