Monitoring of Rebar Corrosion by Means of the Electrical Resistance Probes

The accurate monitoring and appraisal of rebar corrosion could supply the basic data for the durability evaluation, reliability calculation, and estimation of the remainder life of concrete structure. After summarizing various physical test methods, this paper presents the principle of the electrical resistance method in monitoring corrosion in concrete structures. Based on the electrical resistance principle, special corrosion electrical resistance probes were designed and the relationship between the corrosion degree and the electrical resistance change was tested. The theoretical calculation of corrosion of the special corrosion probes, and the relationship between the corrosion degree and the electrical resistance change with time were presented. The results show that the stable electrical resistance can be obtained using the special corrosion probes, which provide a new method for monitoring the environment of rebar corrosion.
