Fatigue Crack Monitoring by Means of Electric Potential

A typical aircraft structural element-LY12-CZ Aluminum alloy plate specimen with central hole was employed as the research object to validate the feasibility of electric potential method in fatigue crack monitoring. After an electric coating was made on the specimen surface by surface technology, a set of fatigue crack monitoring experiments were carried out. According to the experimental results, a set of relation curves and empirical formulae between the voltage values and cracks lengths were obtained, from which conclusion can be drawn out that it is feasible to monitor fatigue cracks by electric potential method.
