Evolution of Chinese Urbanization Spaces: 1949-2003
During the past 50 years, there were many changes in the field of spatial structure of Chinese urban distribution, such as the spatial inequality of cities distribution, spatial aggregation of cities, spatial interaction of urban system and so on. Traditional approach, composed of qualitative analysis and simple data statistical analysis, cant describe the evolution of spatial structure of urban system efficaciously. As a useful method to understand the Kernel spatial approach could be handled by the non-sophisticated. This research shows the results as follow: (1) there were obvious spatial differences in the spatial distribution densities of Chinese cities among the various provinces and municipalities, and the differences were continually increasing from 1949 to 2003.(2) the basic tendency of being dense in the eastern areas while sparse western/being dense in the southern areas while sparse northern in the urban spatial distributions in China has not changed fundamentally. (3) from the scale of province and municipality can it be seen that the spatial-temporal process of the city distribution showed the early period of being weakened from 1949 to 1965, the middle period of being strengthened from 1965 to 1984, and the last period of being weakened again and then keeping stable from 1984 to 2003.(4) the developments of the joint structures in the national city distribution spaces became perfect. (5) as for the city-spaces of cities in the Mainland, the City Convergent Zones increased from 3 in 1949 to 20 in 2003.
