Agglomeration Mechanism of the Animation Industry in Tokyo
Since late 1990s, cultural industries have attracted attention as engine of metropolitan economy in 21st century. This is because one characteristic of these industries is agglomeration in metropolis. In Japan, animation industry, one of the noticeable cultural industries, has been intensively agglomerated in Tokyo. We analyze the agglomeration mechanism of animation industry in Tokyo from business-to-business transaction and labor market perspectives. It was found through our analysis that the agglomeration of animation industry in Tokyo is maintained with (1) proximity to other firms in the same industry that enables transactions based on a relationship of mutual trust, (2) labor market that secures and reproduces specialized labors with flexibility, (3) concentration of contents industry as sponsoring firms, and (4) mutual relationship with special technical schools that provide new employees.
