Monitoring and Simulating Urban Land Use Spatial Evolving Process in Changchun City Using RemoteSensing and GIS

This paper extracts the urban land use spatial classified information of Changchun city, Northeast China in the past 100 years, analyzes the characteristics and model of urban land use spatial evolvement and then simulates spatial expand. Changchun was colonized by Japan during 1931-1945 and became the provincial capital with socialist economy development as the old industry base after liberation. It goes through the special period in urbanization process. This study extracts 6 phases of spatial information of urban land use change in 1905,1932,1954,1976,1990 and 2004 by using Remote Sensing and GIS based on the Oriented-Object Division method. The spatial information classification method of multi-phases urban land use integrating with the hierarchical classification method and the Oriented- Object Division method is applied aiming to classify historical urban land use and to take place the inconsistent spatial location in overlaying spatial analysis with the series data. Based on the RS classification method of knowledge rule and GIS spatial grid technique, we estimated the floor area ratio, and then referenced the historical data and survey data to extract the vertical height space of urban land use evolving process. The analysis of Changchun urban land use evolving process focuses on the urban morphology change with spatial expansion, the functional restructuring of urban land use and the urban vertical height rising of the floor space, including multiples-speed, multiples-pattern and multiples-shape. In this study, we found that the ordinal evolving models of the city were the multi- block pulling model, the single-nuclear homocentric mode, the axial growth mode, and the grouping and multi-nucleus growth mode, and the city high floor risen and land use spatial differentiation strengthened during past 100 years, both processes improved the intensive land use and enhanced land use intensity. The study found that the driving factors of urban land use change have significant temporal characteristics. According to the dominant driving factors, urban development periods include the special development period before liberation (1905- 1948), the socialist reconstruction period after liberation period (1949-1977) and the economic transition period (1978-2004). This study integrates the method of Cellular Automata (CA) and MultiAgent (MA) Model based on GIS, and then establishes the simulation model of urban land use spatial expansion (SMUSE). This model integrates with the spatial behaviors of urban resident, enterprises and government agents and emphasizes urban population growth, policy drive factors to make full use of the advantages of Cellular Automata (CA) and Multi-agent (MA) in the urban micro-evolving process. It not only enhances simulating accuracy and reliability of urban land expansion, but also helps to understand better the process of urbanization, driving forces, and the interaction with human-environment. The simulation results indicate that the area of urban land expansion of Changchun City will increase 19539. 26hm2 from 2004 to 2040. Urban spatial expansion will happen mainly in the three groups (Xinglong, Fufeng and Jingyuetan), the northwest area along highway between the Changchun City and Nongan Town and the southern suburb. Urban land spatial expansion will show the trend of sprawling. The optimization scheme for Changchun City of intensive internal spatial structure and smart growth pattern is proposed based on the characteristics of urban land use change.
