Reconstruction and Spatial Restructuring of Shenyang Tiexi Industrial Area
Shenyang Tiexi Iudustrial Area (STIA) used to be one of the largest urban industrial zones that had grown up under the planned economic system of China. It was designated the only regional reconstruction experimental unit in 1986 by the State Council, ever since it has experienced 3 stages of reconstruction: technology upgrading, system reform and comprehensive reconstruction respectively. Under the background of economic globalization and the national strategy of revitalizing the Northeast old industrial base, new location factors propel STIAs transformation in an unprecedented high speed, being accompanied with spatial restructuring of industry, employment and habitation as well as change of spatial pattern of the whole Shenyang metropolitan area. This paper attempts to find general characteristics for reconstructing Chinas old industrial city and gives some implications by analyzing the process of reconstruction and spatial change of STIA.
