Urban Tourism and Ethnic Representation in Chinese Cities
With the globalization process, more and more cities are entering the competitive global market. Cultural diversity turns out to be an effective tool to position the city in the world city system. Over the past decade or so, disadvantaged, multicultural districts of cities in Europe have been selected, developed and marketed as new destinations for leisure and tourism. Similar changes are also observed in China where cities are dominated by Han culture. Since the opening policy, the ethnic communities have increased at a very rapid speed and the urban tourism further provides them opportunities to promote and present their cultures in the cities where they are living. This study attempts to understand the role of tourism in shaping the presentation of cultural diversity in Chinese cities. It is expected the study will rise the attentions for further research in this area.
