Catholic Tourism in Japan as a Strategy of Local Cities
The purpose of this study is to examine how some religious historic cultures in Nagasaki prefecture become modern tourism resources, and how religious sacred places are constructed as tourist areas. What is the reason for the Catholic Church and Christian Culture to become tourist attractions? We can point out the decrease of tourists in Nagasaki as one of the factors. Recently, the number of tourists to Nagasaki is decreasing, especially hotel guests, including school excursion visitors, which is quite noticeable. Therefore Nagasaki has developed tourism commodities including an historical experience for old and middle aged people as a tourism strategy. Recently, a movement for World Cultural Heritage registration is notable in Japan. Various actors such as a local government and tourism industries, tourists or a host support this movement with a hope for social-economic effects. In this paper, we examined a significance of some local-religious cultures as a Word Cultural Heritage movement through analyzing Nagasaki Church Group in Japan.
