Integrated approach to materials and structural integrity
The materials and structural integrity is a key technology for a wide range of industrial sectors and draws on many disciplines across the materials and engineering fields. The multidisciplinary nature of the technology requires an integration of approaches, often from diverse areas of science and technology. This paper demonstrates the integrated approach for failure assessment of structures containing defects that couples material testing and structural analysis. A damage dependent failure assessment diagram is proposed to include multiple damage mechanisms. An integrated approach for through-life real time assessment of structural integrity based on structural health monitoring is discussed. Future research opportunities are also suggested.
