Transient behavior of creep crack growth under non-steady loading
The loading condition that a high temperature component is subjected to in service may vary with time. Crack growth behavior under non-steady load has not been studied significantly. This paper discusses some observations on transient crack growth behavior in 12% Cr steel X20 under step loading and ramp loading. Step loading tests included step-up tests and step-down tests. Ramp loading comprises of linear ramping up to a higher load and down to a lower load. Creep crack growth tests are performed at 545℃ using 1/2T CT specimens. The crack growth process is analyzed using ABACUS to examine the transient crack tip field. Transient aspects of crack growth are discussed in comparison with crack growth under constant load.
