Low cycle fatigue characteristics of two steels for railway wheel and axle

In this study, total-strain controlled low cycle fatigue tests were performed at different strain amplitudes ranging from 0.2% to 2.3% to observe the low cycle fatigue behaviors of two steels for the railway wheel and the axle. From the experimental results, transition life, cyclic mechanical properties and the cyclic stress-strain curves for both steels were obtained. Quite different cyclic stress amplitude responses were observed between the two steels. Also, the relations between the total strain amplitude and life have been derived using the empirical Coffin-Manson law.
